General platform guidance. Menu names vary by device.

Before you install

An APK is an Android application package. Its filename alone does not establish its publisher, contents, or compatibility. Check the release record before downloading, and make sure the package is intended for your device.

  • Use a source whose publisher and download host you can identify.
  • Compare the package name, version, file size and SHA-256 with the release record, when available.
  • Check the required Android version and leave space for both the installer and installed app.
  • If you are updating, save any settings or data you cannot replace.

Install the APK

  1. Download the intended release

Use a verified download link. Wait for the transfer to finish; do not rename a partial download to .apk.

  2. Open the file

Find the installer in Downloads or your file manager. Confirm the filename and open it.

  3. Review the installation permission

On recent Android versions, the permission is usually called Install unknown apps and applies to the browser or file manager opening the APK. Settings vary by manufacturer.

  4. Read the installer and security prompts

Check the displayed app identity. If Android or Play Protect reports a harmful app, stop and investigate rather than dismissing the warning.

  5. Install, then restore the permission

If the file checks out and installation succeeds, open the app. Remove the browser or file manager’s install permission when you no longer need it.

Review permissions after installation

Grant permissions only when their purpose makes sense for the feature you are using. A download page cannot guarantee what an app does with a permission. You can review access in Android’s app settings, and decline permissions you do not understand.

If installation does not finish

Start with the exact error. A package conflict, incomplete file, incompatible Android version and security block need different responses. Repeatedly downloading random copies makes diagnosis harder.

Follow the “App not installed” checklist or diagnose a problem after installation.
