General platform guidance. Menu names vary by device.

Identify the model and platform

Find the model and software version in the device settings. Then check the manufacturer’s current documentation for app support and installation options. Do not assume that instructions for an older Fire OS device apply to a different platform or newer model.

Check the package source

If your platform supports the package format, check the APK source, release identity and Android requirements. A short download code or shortened link is not proof of the destination or publisher. Prefer a readable destination and a complete release record.

If APK installation is supported

Use the installation method allowed by the device’s current documentation. Any install permission should apply to the specific app opening the installer. Do not switch off security features to work around a harmful-app warning.

After installation, test remote focus, selection and Back before assuming the app is suitable for television use. A successful install is only one compatibility check.

If the platform does not support APKs

Use applications supported by that device. Renaming a file does not change its application format. Avoid downloads claiming to turn an Android APK into a native app for a different operating system.
